Route 29 in Campbell County: planned turn-lane changes, costs and the design-stage schedule

VDOT’s published plan would change turning movements along Route 29, including English Tavern Road. Its cost estimate and future construction dates describe a project still listed in design.

What the published project would change

VDOT’s project page describes longer turn-lane storage, changes or closures at selected median crossovers, and two right-turn lanes from English Tavern Road. VDOT presents these measures as intended to improve traffic flow and reduce conflicts; this report does not independently establish the eventual safety results.

The described corridor runs along Route 29 between the Russell Woods Drive and Calohan Road area. For a particular driveway, crossover or business entrance, use the dated plan sheet and ask the project team to identify the current design. A corridor-level description does not establish the treatment of every property.

The posted schedule is still a forecast

The project page, last updated September 24, 2026, lists in design status, bidding advertisement in winter 2027, construction beginning in spring 2028 and completion in spring 2029. Its estimated total is $22 million: $2 million for preliminary engineering, $7.5 million for right of way and utilities, and $12.5 million for construction.

Treat those dates and amounts as the posted estimates. The linked hearing brochure also says costs may change during project development. An estimate is not the contract award or the amount ultimately paid.

Keep the hearing documents and their dates separate

The brochure linked as August 5, 2025 material identifies UPC 119160 and 119162. Those project identifiers are useful when requesting a plan revision, hearing summary or approval record. The copy contains inconsistent year labeling: its cover says August 5, 2024, while its proposed schedule and comment-close text refer to August 2025. We have not silently corrected that conflict or treated either as a current participation notice.

The project gateway also retains older and updated display sheets. Ask VDOT which revision governs the question you are following. A public-hearing drawing can explain an alternative without proving that all design, right-of-way or construction steps are complete.

Follow the next decision and travel notices

VDOT’s project-process explanation separates planning, design, advertisement and construction. For the next update, look for the current approved plans, funding record and contract action under the same project identifier. For travel today, use VDOT’s traffic-information gateway and its 511 service instead of an estimated future construction season.
