Classroom notice and alternative materials
Under CCPS's posted procedure, teachers give parents or guardians 30 days' notice before using resources containing sexually explicit content. Parents requesting alternatives must notify the teacher at least one week before the planned instruction.
Alternatives are to exclude sexually explicit content and be provided without penalizing the student. CCPS cautions that they may not be available for AP, Dual Enrollment, or national and state assessments. Discuss those circumstances with the teacher when reviewing the assignment.
The district page references policies IIA and IIAB and links the school-specific lists. Some schools have no identified materials in use.
Library access and reconsideration
In Campus Parent, More → Library displays the borrowed item, checkout date and due date. Select the relevant student if your account includes multiple children.
The CCPS library guidance recognizes parents' authority over their own children's reading choices. Removal of a duly selected challenged item requires a reconsideration committee recommendation with the superintendent's concurrence, or formal School Board action on an appeal. The posted handbook links the KLB/KLB-E procedures. A complaint by itself does not establish a removal decision.
The limit of the classroom-notice law
Virginia Code §22.1-16.8 excludes ordinary library availability from its instructional-material definition unless a teacher specifically assigns the material for an assignment or curricular objective. It also bars using the notice law or policies adopted under it as a basis for censoring or removing books.
Our parent-notice explainer follows the distinction between an alternative assignment for one student and reconsideration of a library item.
Attend a meeting or contact the board
The official 2026 meeting schedule lists October 19, November 9 and December 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Campbell County Technical Center, unless otherwise noted. That page also links agendas, recordings and the October 19 livestream. Check it before attending for any schedule change.
Use the member directory to find the representative for your district. For public-comment arrangements, contact CCPS at 434-332-3458. A speaker signup deadline or speaking-time limit has not been confirmed for this guide.
Student prayer and religious expression
Virginia Code §22.1-203.1 permits voluntary student-initiated prayer in public schools. It protects students from pressure by the Commonwealth either to participate in religious observance or to refrain from it, consistent with constitutional principles.
Section 22.1-203.2 directs the state Board of Education, consulting the Attorney General, to develop guidelines on prayer and other religious expression. The guidelines must address rights and restrictions involving staff, students, school facilities, equipment and class time.
These statewide provisions do not establish a Campbell County released-time program. This review did not verify a local LifeWise or other released-time religious-instruction program. Families with a question about a child's school experience can start with the teacher or school administrator.
Read the faith, student prayer and attendance guide for the daily minute of silence, religious-holiday absences, checkout and official contacts.
Home instruction and district records
For a currently enrolled student moving to home instruction, CCPS directs families to contact the school counselor first. The district lists George Peerman, gpeerman@campbell.k12.va.us, 434-821-6213 ext. 338, as its information contact and links the Virginia Department of Education handbook.
For district public records, the official contact page identifies Amy Hunley as FOIA officer: AHunley@campbell.k12.va.us, 434-332-8201. Questions about an individual child's education should go to the child's teacher or school administrator.
The home-instruction and school-options guide explains notice and progress deadlines, the distinct religious exemption, public virtual-school enrollment and activity eligibility.
For the district's photo-release forms, protected-subject survey notices and education-record access, see student privacy and parent notifications. These procedures address information about a student and use different forms from classroom-material review.
