EDUCATION · INDIANA LAW AND DISTRICT RECORDS

Indiana Released-Time Religious Instruction Tracker

Indiana requires qualifying religious release after written parental notice. Elementary and secondary time limits differ, and academic credit is optional. Compare the current statute with district policies, parent forms and documented provider activity.

DOCUMENTED STATUS

2026 Code verified · 15 district research records · 4 detailed trackers

October 8, 2026 baseline. Policy adoption, provider approval, announced launch and documented activity are separate facts. This selective register is not a statewide participation census.

BASELINE08OCT 2026

Can Indiana students leave school for Bible class?

Yes, when the statutory conditions are met. Written parental notice triggers the principal’s release duty. The law covers qualifying religious instruction rather than one named provider. Families and schools collaborate on timing; LifeWise enrollment alone does not establish an agreed school release schedule. Read §20-33-2-19(a)–(c).

How long? Up to 120 minutes weekly for elementary students; for public secondary students, the time equivalent of one elective course weekly. Does it count? Attendance credit is required for qualifying time. Up to two elective academic credits may be available only through a qualifying local policy and course review.

Four detailed district trackers

Mt. Vernon

Mt. Vernon’s E200 combines mandatory qualifying release with a local route to optional secondary-school elective credit. The official policy was revised August 11, 2025. It does not establish that LifeWise or another named provider is currently operating.

West Lafayette

West Lafayette’s policy hub marks E200 Religious Release Time active and adopted December 8, 2025. Its final text differs from the first-reading draft: the final E200 contains no academic-credit authorization. Provider operation remains unverified.

MSD Washington Township

The Indianapolis district publishes both E200 and a detailed parental notice form dated August 27, 2025. Together they explain written notice, revocation and transport arrangements. They do not identify an operating LifeWise program.

West Central

West Central has district records naming LifeWise, including a 2024 bus-rental approval and elementary e-learning procedures. A historical policy manual adds local core-class and make-up-work rules. Current-year attendance, rental terms and a newer consolidated policy remain unverified.

Current Indiana law: duties and limits

Indiana statutory requirements and evidence limits
TopicRule / distinctionPrimary source
Authority and effective dateCurrent 2026 Indiana Code §20-33-2-19. Its history ends with P.L.194-2025, SEC.4; SBOA identifies July 1, 2025 as that amendment’s effective date. No 2026 amendment is listed in the official section reviewed October 8.Source
Required or optional release?A principal must allow qualifying attendance after written parental notice. The principal collaborates with the parent or provider on timing; the provider collaborates to minimize disruption to instructional time. It is not an unconditional right to choose any departure time.Source
Consent and durationWritten parental notice is valid only for the school year in which it is supplied. Local forms may request provider, schedule, transport and contact details. The statute does not select LifeWise or require student participation.Source
Weekly limitsElementary: no more than 120 minutes total per week. Public secondary: no more than the time equivalent of one elective course per week. The statute gives no universal minute conversion for the secondary limit.Source
AttendanceProvider must keep records open to attendance officers. Student receives the same attendance credit as public-school attendance for equal time. This is distinct from academic credit. Historical IDOE guidance describes the release as an excused absence.Source
Make-up work and core classesSection 19 has no express make-up-work deadline or statewide core-subject exclusion. Local academic and scheduling rules require separate review. West Central’s historical policy has both a work-responsibility rule and core-class protection.Source
Transportation and locationSection 19 does not assign a specific driver or transporter. Its credit subsection requires liability coverage for off-property services/transport. Verify off-campus location, safe release/return and responsibility in local documents; do not infer permission to use public-school facilities from silence in this section.Source
Public funds and resourcesThe religious-instruction entity may not be supported wholly or partly by public funds. Section 19 states no de minimis exception like some other states. A bus-rental vote without the contract or accounting record does not establish funding compliance.Source
Eligible providerChurch, association of churches, or association organized for religious instruction and incorporated under Indiana law. No particular denomination or commercial brand is named.Source
Screening and insuranceUnder subsection (f), optional secondary credit requires the provider to agree to expanded criminal-history and expanded child-protection-index checks for employees/contractors likely to have direct, ongoing student contact, plus liability insurance for off-property services/transport. Some local E200 policies apply safeguards more broadly.Source
Academic creditA public secondary school may award up to two total elective academic credits under a board-adopted policy and statutory conditions. Secular evaluation is comparable to nonpublic-school transfer credit, with religious/denominational neutrality. Credit is not automatic.Source
State compliance documentsProvider attendance records are expressly required. Section 19 specifies no statewide provider registration form, insurance dollar minimum or periodic program-status filing. A district may require documentation; absence from this section does not rule out other applicable laws.Source

Attendance credit, elective credit and provider checks

Section 19(e) protects attendance credit. Section 19(f) creates an optional academic-credit route with additional safeguards. A district’s policy must evaluate the course using secular criteria comparable to transfer credit. The law lists instructional hours, syllabus, assessment methods and teacher licensure as possible criteria; it does not make teacher licensure alone a universal provider-eligibility requirement. The decision must remain neutral toward religious content and denomination. Current credit subsection.

For credit-bearing instruction, students first seek a period in the instructional day outside instructional time; if that is unavailable, release remains subject to subsection (c). Expanded checks and insurance in subsection (f) should not be represented as a universal statewide registration regime for every release request.

Local differences matter: Mt. Vernon E200 authorizes a credit-review route. West Lafayette’s final E200 does not contain the credit language in its earlier draft. Washington Township pairs its release policy with a detailed notice form. Their release policies apply provider safeguards beyond simply repeating the statute’s credit subsection.

Parent notice, transportation and missed classes

Start with the principal and the current district form. Confirm the provider, proposed dates, release period, destination, departure and return arrangements, attendance-record exchange and any missed assessments. Distinguish what state law requires from what a local form asks families to provide.

Washington Township’s form says the district does not provide or supervise transportation and allows written revocation. Lanesville’s prior-year elementary handbook assigns travel to family/provider and excludes district facilities. West Central’s historical manual assigns transport to sponsor/family/student, while board records separately approve bus rentals with terms not supplied. These examples do not create one statewide transport contract. Washington Township form · Lanesville handbook · West Central evidence.

Section 19 does not itself establish a make-up-work rule or authorize religious instruction on school property. Constitutional, facility-use, safety and other applicable rules remain relevant. See the national court-context section; do not treat statutory silence as facility approval.

Search and compare 15 Indiana districts

Search district, status, provider or rule; filter by evidence status and sort by name. Expand a row to compare normalized fields. “Unknown-not-located” describes this review’s evidence gap, not a rejection or absence of a program. “Approved” for West Central refers to the documented bus rental, not a blanket compliance finding.

Research selection, search intent and updates

Fifteen candidates were ranked for research value: primary records 30 points, recency 15, documented provider evidence 10, implementation differences 15, observed community interest 10, estimated audience opportunity 10, observed search-result gap 5 and update potential 5. Scores are editorial judgments, not measured traffic, population estimates, provider quality or legal compliance. Ties retain research order.

Live searches surfaced statute mirrors, provider/advocacy summaries, older news and district PDFs. The useful gap is a dated comparison of final local rules and implementation, particularly credit, annual notice and screening. This state page answers Indiana law questions; district pages answer their own local policy and provider searches. Only four received full trackers. The remaining records need stronger or more differentiated evidence before publication as standalone pages.

No automatic monitoring has been scheduled. Future changes should record the source, action date, publication date, former finding and revised finding. Retrieve final minutes, signed agreements and current school notices before changing a proposal or policy status to verified operating activity.

Frequently asked questions

Must Indiana schools allow released-time religious instruction?

For a qualifying request under §20-33-2-19, written parental notice triggers a mandatory principal release duty, with collaborative scheduling and statutory limits. Source

Is every Indiana student limited to two hours per week?

No. Elementary students have a 120-minute weekly maximum. The current secondary-school limit is the time equivalent of one elective course weekly. Source

Is LifeWise Academy required or endorsed by Indiana law?

No named provider is selected by §19. The law describes eligible religious-instruction entities and release conditions. Source

Can LifeWise earn high-school credit in Indiana?

Potentially, if the provider and course meet §19(f) and the board has an authorizing policy. No provider receives automatic statewide academic credit. The total statutory maximum is two elective credits. Source

Who pays for Indiana LifeWise transportation?

Confirm the local arrangement. Section 19 prohibits public support of the religious-instruction entity but does not name a transporter. Some district forms explicitly place transport outside district provision. Source

Does every provider have to register with Indiana under this section?

Section 19 specifies no statewide program registration. It requires attendance records and sets checks/insurance conditions for optional secondary credit; local policies can add documentation rules. Source

Do released-time students have to make up work?

Section 19 has no explicit make-up-work clause. Review local school requirements; West Central’s located historical manual assigns students responsibility for missed work. Source

Are 2024 IDOE instructions still sufficient for the weekly limit?

No. Their two-hour summary predates the 2025 secondary-school amendment. Use current code and retain that guidance only with its historical label. Source
