Osage Released-Time Religious Instruction & Anodos Academy Tracker
Osage’s September 2025 board minutes document administrators meeting Anodos Academy about student release. A district-authored family letter and the provider’s spring 2026 announcement add detail. This review confirms planning and an announced course, not an independently verified October 2026 operating program.
Proposed
Policy, provider plans, facility permission and actual operation are tracked separately. Research baseline: October 8, 2026.
Current status and local rules
| Question | Finding | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Provider / status | Anodos Academy, a provider distinct from LifeWise. Proposed/announced course; current operation unverified. | Document / record |
| Official board record | September 22, 2025 superintendent report describes meeting Anodos and working on departure timing. This discussion item contains no program-approval roll call. | Document / record |
| Policy / participating schools | No final released-time-specific adopted text or current official participant roster was located. The school letter discusses plans for grades 8–12; that is intended eligibility rather than verified attendance. | Document / record |
| Announced spring schedule | Provider advertised Thursdays, 12:35–1:35 p.m., beginning February 26, 2026; Osage High School bus departure 12:28 and return 1:43. Its two end dates conflict: May 21 and May 28. No fall timetable verified. | Document / record |
| Announced transport / location | Provider advertised its bus for Osage students, with other students arranging travel, to Washington School in Osage. Confirm current site access and travel details; this historical announcement is not a current district transportation commitment. | Document / record |
| Family letter / notification | District-authored letter asks parents to notify the school and discusses missed work, records and private responsibility. It is hosted by the provider and carries a conflicting January 8, 2025 printed date. | Document / record |
| State law: weekly release | Qualifying requests must be excused for at least one and no more than five hours per week. This statewide range is not a verified local timetable. | Document / record |
| State law: parent notification | A parent, guardian or legal/actual custodian notifies the school; an emancipated minor acts for themself. §299.1D does not prescribe a statewide form. Provider registration alone does not establish school notification. | Document / record |
| State law: attendance records | The private organization maintains attendance records and makes them available to the school. A local reporting form, delivery frequency and contact must be confirmed separately. | Document / record |
| State law: transportation | Provided by the private organization, parent/guardian/custodian or child. This section does not entitle families to district bus service. | Document / record |
| State law: location | Not on school district property unless the board authorizes use under §297.9. A provider announcement does not establish that authorization. | Document / record |
| State law: make-up work | The child must agree to make up schoolwork not completed during the religious course. Specific assignment deadlines or grading procedures require local confirmation. | Document / record |
| State law: public resources | No district or accredited nonpublic school expenditure related to the course except minimal administrative costs for notification processing and attendance tracking. | Document / record |
| State law: liability | The private organization must provide for and assume liability while the child attends the course. No insurance dollar amount or local coverage certificate is verified here. | Document / record |
| State law: credit and remedies | §299.1D awards no automatic academic credit. Subsection 3 permits eligible claimants alleging a school-district violation to seek injunctions and actual damages; a prevailing plaintiff receives reasonable costs and attorney fees. No local case outcome or special local appeal procedure was located. | Document / record |
What the school’s records establish
The September 22 minutes are a district-hosted primary source. The superintendent reported meeting Anodos and working to find a suitable time to release pupils. That is evidence of administrative coordination, not a recorded board endorsement or attendance record. Official minutes, superintendent report.
The family letter on district letterhead discusses a planned mid-February course. It corroborates the provider relationship, but its printed January 8, 2025 date is inconsistent with its reference to the law signed later in 2025. This tracker preserves that conflict and does not silently change the letter to 2026. Provider-hosted district letter.
How to read the spring announcement
The provider’s spring announcement supplies a one-hour class and separate bus times. Families should distinguish classroom duration from total time away and obtain the school’s current calculation. The inconsistent May end dates also need confirmation. These details do not establish a fall 2026 program. Provider announcement.
The page’s broader academic assurances are provider statements. The controlling Iowa statute still requires agreement to make up missed schoolwork and does not award academic credit merely for attending the private course. Current statute.
What would verify an operating Osage program?
A dated school implementation notice, current release/attendance procedure or independently corroborated record of classes would resolve more than a registration page. The next records sought are the current district policy, corrected original family letter, confirmed timetable, notification form and attendance exchange.
No inference is made that LifeWise runs this course. Anodos is the organization identified in the school minutes; released time describes the legal arrangement, not a single provider. Official board archive.

How current Iowa law applies
The law requires qualifying release for at least one and at most five hours weekly, family notification, provider attendance records and liability, privately arranged transport and agreement to make up missed schoolwork. School-property use requires authorization under §297.9; public spending is limited to the narrow administrative exception. No automatic academic credit follows.

Can missed assignments simply be skipped?
No. A qualifying request requires the child to agree to make up schoolwork not completed during the course. Source
