Blount County Church Cemeteries: Historic Records, Research Help and Visitor Access
Alabama’s October historic cemetery register includes Blount County sites with church connections. The register, research collections and access law answer different questions about a family-history visit.

The October register identifies 13 Blount County sites
The Alabama Historic Cemetery Register dated October 5, 2026 lists 13 Blount County cemeteries on page 8. Among the entries are Dailey’s Chapel Cemetery, listed June 17, 2008; Hanover Cemetery, also identified as Remlap United Methodist Church Cemetery, listed March 31, 2014; and Stewart’s Chapel Cemetery, also called Peeps Crack Cemetery, listed August 23, 2024.
Those are designation dates in an updated statewide register. They do not describe new October 2026 designations, establish present church ownership or supply a list of everyone buried at each site.
A historic map is a research starting point
The Historical Commission’s map guidance includes Blount among the counties plotted. Its layers cover cemetery designations and other historic properties; entries may include attachments from the agency’s files.
The commission cautions that records can be outdated and that absence from the map does not mean a place lacks historical importance. Most mapped properties are private. A mapped location is therefore a lead to investigate, not a current visitor schedule or permission to enter.
The museum offers a local place to begin
The Blount County Memorial Museum’s genealogy page describes research books, family histories and maps, and asks researchers to call for an appointment. It says services are free, with a copier charge. The page also advertises a vacancy for a volunteer to head the genealogy department, so confirm assistance before traveling.
The museum website lists 204 2nd Avenue East, Oneonta, Tuesday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and 205-973-0465. The county’s museum page gives the same location and hours but lists 205-973-8546. These are the published numbers; we did not place a call or verify a research appointment.
Bring the cemetery’s alternate names, the family surname and an approximate date range when asking which holdings may help. A collection description does not guarantee that a particular burial record survives.
Private-land access has conditions
Alabama Code §35-1-4 provides cemetery access for specified relatives and friends, plot owners and genealogical, historical or cultural researchers, with reasonable notice to the owner or lessee. Access must be reasonable and for the purposes the law identifies.
The owner or lessee may reasonably designate frequency, hours and duration, and an access route where no traditional route is obvious. Visitors are responsible for damage they cause. Arrange the visit with the relevant owner or caretaker; neither this report nor a historic designation settles access to a particular property.
Preservation work requires its own inquiry
The commission’s cemetery program assists with documentation and preservation and publishes permit guidance for substantial work in cemeteries at least 75 years old, including relocation of remains. A family-history visit and a restoration project are different undertakings.
Before planning such work, ask the cemetery program which requirements apply; its published contact is 334-230-2653. No condition assessment, burial location or proposed repair at a Blount cemetery was independently inspected for this report.
Sources and reporting
We counted the 13 Blount entries on page 8 of the October 5 register, checked their designation dates, reviewed the commission’s map limits, and compared the current statute with its cemetery-access reference sheet. The museum and county publish different contact numbers, attributed separately. No cemetery visit, landowner permission, burial inventory, church ownership, staff availability or restoration eligibility was verified. The current register is not presented as a new local designation or a complete burial census.
