Church Weddings in Blount County: The Ceremony and Alabama Marriage Certificate Are Separate Steps
Couples may hold a church wedding, but Alabama’s legal recording process centers on a signed, notarized certificate. The county’s published instructions explain the filing step and fee.

A ceremony does not replace the certificate process
A church wedding in Oneonta or elsewhere in Blount County can commemorate a marriage, while Alabama’s paperwork follows a separate process. The county probate office’s marriage page explains that the state changed from issuing marriage licenses to recording notarized marriage certificates on August 29, 2019.
The county says a ceremony is optional under Alabama law. Couples planning a religious service should therefore distinguish arrangements with their congregation from the certificate’s signing and recording requirements. This report does not describe any congregation’s wedding policy or announce a new county rule.
The signing dates set the filing window
The Alabama Department of Public Health’s FAQ, updated June 12, 2026, says the completed, signed and notarized form must reach a county probate court within 30 days of the later spouse signature. If the spouses sign on different days, that later date determines the marriage date when the filing requirements are met.
The FAQ says mailed forms must arrive within the deadline. The date of a church service is not the date used in that published signature-based calculation.
Notarization comes before recording
The Blount probate instructions tell couples to complete the state form, sign before a notary and bring the notarized document for recording. The state FAQ says the notary must be authorized under Alabama law and that electronic signatures are not accepted on the certificate.
The state’s marriage-certificates page links the official form and instructions. Review those instructions before signing, including the separate form requirements where applicable; this article does not determine an individual’s eligibility to marry.
Blount publishes a $75 recording fee
The county marriage page lists a $75 recording fee and says a certified copy is provided to the couple at recording. Its page is undated; the amount was checked October 19, 2026. Confirm the current amount and accepted payment method before submitting.
The probate office website lists its main location at 220 2nd Avenue East in Oneonta and 205-973-0584. It says all services are offered at the main courthouse, while the Hayden annex offers limited services. Confirm the appropriate location for the transaction.
Ordering a copy is different from recording a new marriage
ADPH’s marriage-records guidance, updated June 2, 2026, separates completing a new certificate from obtaining a copy of an existing record. It lists a $15 state search fee that includes one certified copy or a failure-to-find certificate, with additional copies ordered together costing $6 each.
Those state copy fees are separate from Blount’s recording fee. The state page also explains that marriage records are unrestricted: a requester with enough identifying information and the required fee may seek a copy. A church keepsake should not be confused with a certified government record.
Sources and reporting
We compared the county’s published marriage instructions and fee with ADPH’s June 2026 guidance. The August 2019 process change is historical. Ceremony arrangements, certificate execution, recording and ordering copies are treated separately. No wedding, congregation policy, notary appointment, current transaction quote or individual marriage eligibility was verified.
