Palisades Park: Plan a Visit, a Climb or a Family Gathering
Palisades Park brings mountain views, trails and gathering spaces close to Oneonta. A useful visit starts with checking the activity you want, especially climbing permits, rentals and access to the fire tower.

A mountain setting for an ordinary afternoon
The Blount County Commission describes Palisades Park as a place for hiking, playground visits and family gatherings, with three event cabins and six pavilions. Its setting above Oneonta makes a picnic or short walk an alternative to planning a full-day excursion.
The Blount County Economic Development Council also highlights restored log cabins, nature trails and spaces available for weddings and family functions. Choose the outing first: an informal visit, a reserved gathering and a climbing trip involve different arrangements.
Start with the park office
The county’s current staff directory lists Palisades Park at 205-973-0453. Ask about opening and closing times for your visit date, the entrance to use and any closed areas. The county’s recreation directory links the park’s Facebook page for further information.
For a group, confirm parking, restroom access and the route between the parking area and the planned activity. If someone needs a step-free route or a shorter walk, describe that need before choosing a meeting point; a general park listing does not establish access to every feature.
The fire tower needs a separate access check
The county’s About page labels the park’s fire tower under renovation. That statement does not provide a reopening date. Older travel accounts describing a tower climb should not be read as confirmation that the tower is open now.
Ask the office which overlooks and trails are available, then build the visit around those confirmed options. Keep children close around bluff areas and follow posted barriers and staff directions.
Climbing has its own permit and cutoff
The Southeastern Climbers Coalition’s Palisades access page identifies Blount County as the land manager and instructs climbers to visit the park office for a permit each visit. It lists a $5 permit valid for three days and a $35 annual permit; confirm current prices and requirements with the office.
Its posted permit-issue cutoff is 3 p.m. October through March and 6 p.m. April through September. These are permit deadlines, not a statement of park closing times. The coalition also prohibits bolting, chipping and gluing, calls for padding trees used in top-rope or rappelling setups, and says camping is not allowed. Follow the park’s current instructions; this report provides no climbing instruction or assessment of route conditions.
Reserve the space before inviting the group
The economic development council lists lodges and pavilions for rent. Before sending invitations, ask the park to confirm the date, specific facility, capacity, price, deposit, cancellation terms and allowed setup time. Also check whether tables, kitchen access or cleanup are included in the reservation you are considering.
For a fall outing, Alabama Tourism’s Fall Color Trail includes Palisades and Blount County’s covered bridges. Its seasonal guidance is a planning resource, not a live foliage or access report. Check the forecast and the park’s updates close to departure.
Sources and reporting
WorthFighting.org reviewed county, economic-development, state-tourism and Southeastern Climbers Coalition sources on October 19, 2026. The county’s fire-tower renovation notice is distinguished from older travel descriptions. Climbing prices and cutoffs are attributed to the coalition and require park confirmation; they are not treated as general park hours. Conflicting acreage figures across tourism sources are not used. We did not visit the park, confirm access or conditions, or reserve a facility.
