Blount County Animal Adoption: Visits, Surrender Appointments and Ways to Help

The county shelter welcomes adoption visits and asks owners to arrange surrender appointments. Published directions and Saturday hours differ across local listings, making a quick confirmation call useful before a trip.

Call the Cleveland shelter before traveling

The county Animal Services page lists the Animal Adoption Center at 5554 County Highway 1, Cleveland, AL 35049, telephone 205-973-0493. It posts Tuesday–Friday hours of 11 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Saturday hours of 11 a.m.–2 p.m.

There are discrepancies worth checking: the county’s facility-directory listing gives 5241 County Highway 1, while the county-linked BlountAnimals shelter page gives 5554 and a Saturday opening time of 9 a.m. Both use the same telephone number. Confirm the entrance and Saturday schedule directly rather than relying on an older saved listing.

Online listings are a starting point

The county says adoption appointments are appreciated but not required. The adoption-information page links Adopt a Pet, Facebook and 24PetConnect, while explaining that only some available animals appear online.

That page says visitors may bring their dog to check compatibility with a dog they hope to adopt. Ask staff how to arrange that introduction before arriving. Discuss the animal’s known history, household fit, current adoption charge and included services; an online photograph cannot answer those questions or guarantee an animal remains available.

Allow time for the conversation. Describe your household’s other pets, routine and practical limits so staff can help you explore a suitable match.

Arrange surrender separately

The county directs owners seeking an animal-surrender appointment to contact the center by telephone or Facebook. An adoption visit and a surrender appointment are different requests; arriving during public hours does not establish that intake has been arranged.

When calling, explain the situation, ask what information or records staff need and confirm the appointment before transporting the animal. This report has not checked current shelter capacity or an individual animal’s intake eligibility.

Volunteering can include more than animal handling

The county-linked volunteer resource describes greeter work, animal socialization, fostering and writing pet descriptions. Greeter duties include welcoming visitors, answering calls and helping staff share information.

For socialization, the page says children need direct parental or guardian supervision; 16- and 17-year-olds may volunteer independently with signed parental or guardian consent. Ask the shelter about the current application, orientation and tasks appropriate for your family. A listed role is an invitation to inquire, not a confirmed opening or shift.

For fostering, discuss the animal’s needs, time commitment and support arrangements with staff before agreeing to a placement.

Ask about assistance before booking a procedure

The county’s Animal Services page links low-cost spay-neuter programs. Alabama Spay Neuter lists 205-956-0012 for clinic appointments and 877-334-9738 for transport arrangements.

Ask the clinic which assistance program applies, what documentation it needs, the total charge and whether transport serves your location on the desired date. Follow the clinic’s instructions for the animal’s care and appointment preparation. Program links do not confirm funding, a transport seat or an available appointment.

WorthFighting.org compared county listings, the county-linked BlountAnimals resource and the clinic’s own website on October 19, 2026. BlountAnimals is an independently maintained pro bono resource with information contributed by the shelter and other local agencies, not the county government’s website. The address and Saturday-hour discrepancies remain unresolved and are disclosed. We did not contact staff, confirm an animal’s availability, determine intake eligibility, book veterinary care or submit a volunteer application.
