Confronting China: An America First Strategy

The Strategic Choice

America faces a deliberate, long-term challenge from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This is not a normal geopolitical rivalry. The CCP is pursuing military expansion, economic coercion, theft of technology, and ideological subversion. Conservatives must be blunt: defending the Constitution, protecting families and faith, and preserving American sovereignty demand an unapologetic, America First response.

The era of naive engagement and globalist appeasement is over. We cannot outsource national security or basic goods to a regime that violates human rights, threatens our allies, and seeks technological and military dominance. The first obligation of any government is to secure the homeland and preserve the liberties under our Constitution. That requires decisive policies that put American interests — citizens, workers, and families — first.

The Threat in Plain Terms

The CCP’s strategy is comprehensive. It uses state-controlled industry and predatory investment to capture supply chains, floods markets with subsidized products to wipe out competitors, steals advanced technology from American companies, and uses economic leverage to compel policy changes abroad. Militarily, it is building a navy and missile forces intended to deny American access to the Western Pacific and threaten Taiwan.

These are not abstract dangers. They directly imperil the prosperity and security of American households — from the price and availability of essential goods to the safety of our children and grandchildren. A free people cannot flourish under the shadow of a rival whose ideology is explicitly hostile to freedom.

Pillars of an America First China Policy

  1. Economic Decoupling Where Necessary: We must re-shore critical manufacturing and diversify supply chains for semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, rare earths, and other strategic materials. Targeted tariffs, incentives for domestic production, and rigorous screening of foreign investment will reduce our vulnerability. Economic independence is national defense.

  2. Strict Export Controls and Technology Defenses: No more exporting our crown-jewel technologies to bolster a strategic competitor. Strengthen export controls, expand CFIUS-like authority, and criminalize corporate complicity in technology transfer to the CCP.

  3. Military Deterrence and Readiness: Rebuild our Navy, modernize our deterrent forces, and fund training and readiness. The best diplomacy is credible strength. Our commitments to partners in the Pacific — including an unambiguous posture toward Taiwan’s self-defense — must be backed by resources and resolve.

  4. Alliance Realism and Partnership: Reinforce partnerships with democracies in the region, but do so from a position of American leadership, not reliance on multinational bureaucracies. We can cooperate where interests align — supply chains, intelligence-sharing, and joint defense — while refusing to cede sovereignty to global institutions.

  5. Domestic Resilience: Strengthen the family, faith, and civil society institutions that sustain freedom. A strong, moral culture undergirds national strength. Economic policies should prioritize American workers and employers, not offshore profiteers.

Concrete Actions for Congress and the Administration

  • Pass targeted legislation to incentivize semiconductor and critical-mineral production on U.S. soil.
  • Expand screening and prohibition powers against Chinese acquisitions of American companies and farmland.
  • Enact stronger export controls on advanced computing, AI, and quantum technologies that have clear military applications.
  • Invest in shipbuilding, munitions production, and military pay to attract and retain talent.
  • Require federal procurement preferences for U.S.-made goods in critical categories.

These are not radical ideas. They are prudent, constitutional measures to protect American life and liberty.

Restoring American Resolve

Too many in our political class remain distracted by globalist fantasies and corporate lobbying that benefits foreign adversaries. Conservatives must reject this complacency. Patriotism requires policies that put the American people first. That includes defending our borders, securing our economy, and preserving the institutions that allow faith and family to flourish.

We should engage in free and fair trade where it benefits America, but trade must never be weaponized against our national security or cultural foundations. The proper role of government is limited at home but fierce in defense of the republic.

For more perspectives on national security and sovereignty, see our coverage in Foreign Policy and the imperative of secure borders in Border Security.

Why This Matters

The choices we make now determine whether America remains the land of liberty or becomes economically and strategically dependent on a hostile regime. An America First China policy defends constitutional freedoms, protects families and faith, and restores the sovereign authority of the American people. This is the conservative path: strong defense, economic prudence, and moral clarity. The time to act is now.
