Blount County Vehicle Registration: New Residents & Tag Renewals

Moving to Blount County or renewing a tag? Start with the correct deadline, gather the title and insurance documents, and choose the right county service before making a trip.

Start with the reason you are registering

Alabama’s Department of Revenue guidance gives an owner of a noncommercial vehicle with valid registration from another jurisdiction 30 days from the vehicle’s entry into Alabama to register it. Blount County’s new-resident page describes the deadline as 30 calendar days after moving into the state. If your move and the vehicle’s arrival happened on different dates, ask the licensing office how the rule applies.

A newly purchased or acquired vehicle has a separate 20-calendar-day registration deadline under the state guidance. For a move from another Alabama county, Blount directs residents to handle the county change in person during their tag-renewal month.

Gather the out-of-state vehicle documents

The county’s checklist calls for the last or current out-of-state registration, valid licenses for all parties, proof of Blount County residency and Alabama insurance showing the VIN, insurer’s NAIC number, policy number and coverage period.

  • No lien: bring the original title.
  • With a lien: the county lists a title copy or electronic copy. If your state gave you the valid original title, it must be surrendered with the Alabama title application.

The county accepts a valid out-of-state driver’s license for this registration process. For an Alabama county-to-county move, bring the prior registration or renewal notice, each owner’s license or state ID, Alabama insurance and residency proof.

Choose a renewal method

Use the county’s renewal calendar to check the month assigned to your surname or vehicle category. October covers U, V, W, X, Y and Z and National Guard registrations; commercial and fleet vehicles, except IRP, are listed in November.

The county links an online renewal portal. Its other renewal options include office service, mail and kiosks in Blountsville, Locust Fork, Warrior and the courthouse. Follow the county’s location list before traveling to a kiosk.

For mailed renewals, the county recommends sending the entire notice, insurance copy and payment by the 20th to allow processing before month-end. That mailing recommendation is not a new registration deadline. Specialty plates may require additional proof.

Where to go in Oneonta or Hayden

The state licensing-office directory lists Blount County tags and titles at 205-973-0597, 220 Second Avenue East, Room 104, Oneonta. The county’s office information lists weekday hours of 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

The Hayden Satellite Office is at 306 Second Avenue, Hayden, with the same posted weekday hours and a noon–1 p.m. lunch closure. Confirm holiday hours and whether your particular title transaction can be completed there before traveling.

The county lists cash, cards, checks and money orders for in-person renewals; its posted card-processing charge is 2.5%. Ask for the full amount for your vehicle and plate. Registration fees and vehicle taxes are separate parts of the total.

Questions that can save a second trip

Tell the office whether this is an interstate move, county move, purchase or routine renewal. Ask whether all owners must attend, whether a lender must supply documents, and whether the vehicle needs to be available for a VIN or ownership-document inspection.

State guidance says a title application must precede registration when a title is required, and a routine renewal does not require an inspection. This guide does not determine a particular vehicle’s title exemption or tax amount. Keep the completed registration and confirm the next renewal month before leaving.

We reviewed county registration instructions, the county-linked renewal portal and Alabama Department of Revenue guidance on October 19, 2026. The guide distinguishes interstate moves, moves within Alabama, purchases and renewals. The county's move-date wording and the state's vehicle-entry wording are separately attributed. Office hours and card fees are published information, not a confirmed appointment or individual quote. We did not submit a registration, inspect a vehicle or determine a taxpayer's liability.
