Which school system should you contact?

Blount County SchoolsThe county directory includes Appalachian, Cleveland, Hayden, Locust Fork, Southeastern, Susan Moore and other county schools. Start with the county school board page.415 5th Avenue East, Oneonta, AL 35121. Phone: 205-775-1950.
Oneonta City SchoolsThe city system lists Oneonta Elementary, Oneonta Middle and Oneonta High. Use the Oneonta City Schools website.28370 State Highway 75, Oneonta, AL 35121. Phone: 205-543-1515.

Use your child's enrolled school to identify the correct board. If you are moving or applying for enrollment, ask the district to confirm which rules apply to your address. Oneonta publishes a separate nonresident enrollment policy and application; a mailing address alone is an insufficient guide to an individual student's eligibility.

How to address the Blount County school board

The county's Request to Address the Board form sets out a specific process. Complete and sign Part I, then submit it to the superintendent's office no later than the Wednesday before the board meeting. The form says regular meetings are typically held on the first Monday of the month. Check the current board calendar for the actual date, time and location.

The form asks for contact information, school affiliation and a short description of the issue. People granted permission to address the board receive five minutes. Keep a copy of the submission and the office's confirmation so you know whether your request has been placed on the agenda.

Oneonta board agendas, minutes and speaking requests

Oneonta's board meeting information page links to its Simbli meeting records. The district says agendas become publicly viewable 30 minutes before a meeting. Minutes appear after board approval, typically at the following regular meeting. Records from before September 2023 are organized separately in the archive.

For an upcoming meeting, open the current meeting entry and confirm the notice with the district office. Ask Oneonta directly about its speaker-request deadline, submission method and time limit. The county board's request form applies to the county system. A posted agenda shows planned business; approved minutes help establish what the board actually decided.

Where to find school policies and classroom materials

Both systems link their policy manuals through Simbli: Blount County policies and Oneonta City policies. Save the policy number and revision date when raising a question. This makes it easier for staff and board members to identify the same rule.

The county's curriculum page identifies adopted courses of study and instructional resources by subject and grade. It also explains that families need school-issued access information to create a PowerSchool parent account. Ask your school for help obtaining that access.

Alabama's education department explains the classroom-materials process in its September 26, 2024 guidance on Act 2024-35. Schools must post adopted curricula at the start of the school year and within 30 calendar days after adoption of new or revised curricula.

A parent or guardian of an enrolled child may request a detailed summary of covered classroom materials from the teacher. Required reading titles must appear on the syllabus, which is available on request. The guidance also describes requesting additional information or physical examination of materials through a board work session.

If the teacher does not comply, the parent may use the local superintendent's complaint form. If the local complaint remains unresolved after 10 school days, the state provides a complaint form and submission instructions. Keep the original request, local complaint and any responses; the state form requests those records.

Use the process that matches the concern

For county Title I schools, the Federal Programs page provides a separate Parent Right to Know process for requesting teacher and paraprofessional qualifications, with English and Spanish forms. It also describes parent resources available through county schools.

For bullying, harassment or intimidation in Oneonta City Schools, the district's Report Harassment page directs families to complete its complaint form and submit it to the relevant school principal. The published process includes an investigation and written response.

For any request, identify the school, class or policy; explain the information or response you need; and keep a dated record. Send sensitive student details through the school process. A concise public comment can focus on the policy question while staff handle the individual student's circumstances.

For reading outside school, our Oneonta Public Library card guide explains the separate public-library rules for children and teens.
