The Village of Pingree Grove announced on October 30, 2026 that the Route 20/Reinking Road roundabout is open. That notice supersedes the earlier closure status. It does not establish final contract acceptance, final cost or completion of every remaining item.
Editorially updated . Individual evidence dates and limitations appear below.
Updated October 30, 2026. The Village of Pingree Grove's October 30 opening notice says the Route 20/Reinking Road roundabout is now open. This is the latest dated official traffic-status notice reviewed and supersedes the earlier closure information.
The notice does not give an opening time, a lane-by-lane description, final contract acceptance or a final cost. Opening to traffic and completing every contract obligation are separate milestones.

| Lead agencies | City of Elgin and Illinois Department of Transportation |
| Village role | Publishes local notices; has said it does not manage this project |
Is Reinking Road open now?
The village announced the roundabout open on October 30. Use that dated notice for this update; follow current field signs and IDOT road-closure information for later restrictions or temporary work.
The old staged detour maps below remain useful construction records. They are not a current instruction to take a detour after the opening announcement.
What is being built at US 20 and Reinking Road?
The project replaces the existing three-leg intersection with a roundabout. IDOT contract 61J28 describes work that includes:
- Pavement removal and new Portland cement concrete roadway pavement.
- Storm sewers and water-main work.
- Curb and gutter.
- Sidewalks and pedestrian improvements.
- Lighting.
- Landscaping.
- Pavement markings and related work.
The contract bulletin lists 95 working days. Working days are a contract-administration measure, not 95 consecutive calendar days and not a guarantee of a public opening date. Weather, construction staging, utility work, traffic control and other contract conditions can affect the calendar.
Official contract source: IDOT contract 61J28.
Construction timeline
| Date | Documented milestone | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| May 28, 2019 | Public informational meeting on the roundabout and sidewalk improvements | Final construction design or start date |
| June 14, 2024 letting | IDOT contract 61J28 listed the three-leg roundabout scope | Construction completion |
| April 3, 2026 | Village said full project detours would begin the week of April 13; August was then the projected end | That August remained the final schedule |
| April 17, 2026 | Village announced Reinking Road closed between Public Street and US 20, projected through September | Reopening in September |
| July 8, 2026 | Elgin reported underdrain installation complete and concrete work approaching | Finished roadway or open intersection |
| August 21, 2026 | Elgin scheduled concrete and curb work for August 24–25, a phase change August 26 and pavement removal August 27–29 | Completion of those tasks without a later record |
| September 25, 2026 | Elgin public works director said the project was about 80% complete, Reinking remained closed and completion was expected later in 2026 | A specific opening date |
| October 10, 2026 review | No official reopening or completion notice located in the reviewed project pages | Proof that no unpublished field change occurred |
| October 30, 2026 | Village posts an affirmative roundabout opening notice | Final contract acceptance, final project cost or an exact opening time |
The project has carried several projected end dates. The useful status is the newest dated evidence, not the earliest forecast repeated in search results.
Historical construction detour plans
The Village links a three-page IDOT detour-plan PDF with staged traffic-control layouts. The plans show a closure at the Reinking Road/US 20 project area and detour signing across the regional network, including US 20, Illinois 47, Illinois 72, Big Timber Road, Highland Avenue and local approaches.
Use the official detour-plan PDF as a construction-plan reference, not as a promise that every stage remains active today. The sheets contain separate Stage 1 and Stage 2 layouts, and field signs control when construction staging changes.
Why we do not publish one permanent turn-by-turn detour
The plan is staged. A route appropriate during one closure or lane shift may be wrong during another. Construction crews can move barricades and lane assignments as work advances. Drivers should follow the signs installed for the current stage and use live conditions for the trip time.
August and September work details
Elgin's July 8 construction roundup said underdrain installation was complete and subgrade aggregate placement along US 20 and Reinking Road was expected to finish that week. Concrete pavement installation was expected to begin, followed by curb and gutter work.
On August 21, Engage Elgin said crews were scheduled to pour concrete and install curb and gutter August 24–25. The project was expected to enter its next phase August 26, with pavement removal August 27–29.
The September 25 report said pavement removal had been completed a few weeks earlier. That sequence is consistent with the August schedule, but it still does not establish that all paving, lighting, landscaping, markings or final acceptance work is complete.

Who is responsible for the project?
The Village identifies the roundabout as an IDOT/City of Elgin project. Its April traffic notice expressly reminded residents that Pingree Grove was not involved with managing this specific project. Pingree Grove nevertheless provides local closure notices and the detour-plan link because the traffic impact directly affects village residents.
Use the responsible body for the question:
| Question | Starting point |
|---|---|
| Construction progress, staging or anticipated completion | City of Elgin project contact and Engage Elgin |
| State highway traffic or current closure map | IDOT and Getting Around Illinois |
| Local village notice or resident communication | Village of Pingree Grove |
| Contract scope and working-day terms | IDOT contract 61J28 |
| A crash, hazard or emergency | 911 or the appropriate police agency |
The Village is not the source for every contract or construction record merely because the closure affects a road used by village residents.
Separate nearby project: Illinois 72 resurfacing
A separate IDOT announcement covers work north of the roundabout. IDOT announced a $3.2 million resurfacing and shoulder-repair project on Illinois 72 from Reinking Road to Industrial Drive in Gilberts, beginning August 17, 2026. IDOT said it would require intermittent daytime lane closures and was anticipated to continue through December, while maintaining access to residences and businesses.
That Illinois 72 work is separate from the US 20/Reinking roundabout. A delay on Route 72 should not be described as proof of a new roundabout closure, and the roundabout's completion would not automatically mean the Route 72 resurfacing is finished.
Source: IDOT, Higgins Road resurfacing begins August 17.
Do not confuse this with Reinking Road at Damisch Road
Pingree Grove has also planned reconstruction of the existing small roundabout at Reinking Road and Damisch Road. That is a different intersection and a different project from the US 20/Reinking construction covered here.
Search results and public records should be checked for the exact intersection name. A 2027 Reinking/Damisch project milestone would not mean the US 20 roundabout reopened or closed again.
What remains to be verified?
The October 30 notice establishes the village's open-to-traffic announcement. A later review should seek substantial-completion or final-acceptance documentation, final inspection or punch-list records, and a final pay application or contract closeout. Those records would answer different questions about remaining work and costs.
How to report a problem or request an update
For a current traffic emergency or unsafe condition, call 911. For project-status questions, use the contact information on the Engage Elgin project page. For a state-road condition or hazard, use IDOT's contact and reporting resources.
For a remaining-work question, ask the responsible agency for the current punch list, any temporary traffic restrictions and the acceptance or closeout record. The opening notice should not be stretched into a claim that every contract item is complete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Reinking Road open at US 20?
Yes. The Village of Pingree Grove announced the Route 20/Reinking Road roundabout open on October 30, 2026. Check current signs for any later temporary restriction.
When will the US 20 and Reinking Road roundabout be finished?
The village announced it open on October 30, 2026. Final contract completion and acceptance remain separate records that this review has not verified.
Wasn't the project supposed to end in August or September?
The Village published both August and September projections at different points. Those were forecasts. The September 25 report described it as about 80% complete; the later October 30 village notice announces it open.
Who is building the roundabout?
The Village identifies it as a City of Elgin and IDOT project. Pingree Grove posts local notices but has said it is not managing the project.
Where is the official detour map?
The Village links the IDOT three-page staged detour plan. The plan is a historical staging record; the October 30 opening notice supersedes the old closure status. Follow current signs.
Is US 20 completely closed?
The village announced the roundabout open on October 30. Its short notice does not describe every lane or any later temporary restriction; the September lane shift remains a historical report.
Is the Illinois 72 roadwork part of the roundabout?
No. IDOT's resurfacing from Reinking Road to Industrial Drive is a separate project expected to create intermittent daytime lane closures through December 2026.
Does 95 working days identify the opening date?
No. It is a contract term, not a simple consecutive-day countdown and not a public reopening guarantee.
