Blount County Business Licenses: The November 2 State Renewal Deadline
October is state business-license renewal season, but this year’s deadline extends to November 2. Blount County’s probate office handles state licenses; Oneonta’s city license follows a different calendar.

Update note: Rechecked October 29, 2026: the state’s dated notice still gives November 2 for timely renewals and November 3 as the earliest delinquent-penalty date. Blount probate and Oneonta’s separate city-license instructions were also checked.
Before the November 2 deadline
Use the amount and instructions from the issuing office, retain the renewal notice, and keep proof of payment or mailing. The state notice treats renewals postmarked by November 2, 2026 as timely regardless of arrival date. Confirm hours before an in-person visit and check how your chosen mailing service records the postmark.
Blount probate handles the state license. Oneonta’s municipal license follows a January–December license year, so the state extension should not be treated as a city renewal deadline.
Why the 2026 deadline is November 2
An Alabama Department of Revenue notice extends the 2026 state/county business-privilege license renewal deadline to Monday, November 2, because October 31 falls on a weekend. Renewals postmarked by November 2 count as timely regardless of when they arrive. The notice says delinquent penalties should begin no earlier than November 3.
The notice is dated September 14 and was posted September 22, 2026. It supplies the year-specific exception to the department’s general annual guidance, which describes an October renewal month for a license year running October 1 through September 30.
Keep the notice with your renewal paperwork and retain proof of payment or mailing. Ask the issuing office to confirm the amount and payment instructions for your account before sending a renewal.
Blount issues the state license, not a separate county license
The Blount County Probate Office expressly says the county does not require its own county business license. The office issues licenses on behalf of Alabama. It also warns that a business in a municipality may need that town’s license.
The county page describes renewal reminders mailed around October 1, including the amount due. It accepts payment in person at the courthouse or Hayden Annex and by mail to the probate office at 220 Second Avenue East, Oneonta, AL 35121. New businesses can submit an application in person during the year.
The probate office’s location page lists the Oneonta office at 205-973-0584 and the Hayden Annex at 306 Second Avenue, 205-590-2851. Confirm office hours and the required documents before traveling.
Oneonta has its own license year and classification
Oneonta’s licensing instructions set a January 1–December 31 city license year. Every city business license expires December 31, regardless of when it was issued. The state’s November 2 renewal extension does not establish a city renewal deadline.
The city Revenue Department assigns the business classification and identifies the city taxes to remit after reviewing a completed application. Its page links the application and renewal portal and says separate lines of business require separate applications and licenses.
For a classification or renewal question, the city lists 205-813-7182 and apearman@cityofoneonta.us. Describe what the business does and where it operates; ask how the city’s rules apply before choosing a classification or paying a fee.
A license question starts with the activity and location
The state’s privilege-license overview ties requirements to the businesses and professions described in Alabama law. It directs operators to the relevant county office and says ALDOR does not administer municipal licenses. Businesses should check with each city where they conduct business.
Give the licensing office a clear description of the goods or services, the physical location and any work performed elsewhere. Ask whether a change in activities or location affects the license. This report does not determine an individual business’s classification, exemption or total fee.
Keep the different obligations in separate files
Maintain a record for each issuing office: application, classification, payment receipt, license period and next renewal date. A state-license renewal and a city-license renewal should be checked separately, even when both relate to the same storefront.
For other local obligations, see our reports on property-tax payment and homestead procedures and lodging-tax rules. Their deadlines and eligibility questions are distinct from business licensing.
Sources and reporting
Originally published October 19, 2026. WorthFighting.org rechecked all six linked state, county and city sources on October 29. The notice remains dated September 14 and posted September 22, 2026; November 2 is its year-specific state/county renewal deadline. Blount’s statement that it has no separate county business license and Oneonta’s separate municipal license year are retained. We did not inspect a private account, assign a classification, calculate fees or submit an application.
