Tim Walz and Ilhan Omar Should Enroll in Clown School

Walz's failed VP run and Omar's endless controversies make them Minnesota's biggest Democratic liabilities. Maybe clown school is the answer.

Key Takeaways

  • 1.Governor Tim Walz's vice presidential run was widely seen as a failure, losing every swing state in 2024.
  • 2.Rep. Ilhan Omar has been a near-constant source of controversy for Democratic leadership since 2019.
  • 3.Both figures are viewed as liabilities by many within their own party.
  • 4.The piece argues Walz and Omar prioritize performance over governance.

Minnesota has given America a lot of great things: Prince, the Mall of America, and hotdish. But it has also given the Democratic Party two of its most consistently embarrassing figures: Governor Tim Walz and Representative Ilhan Omar. Together, they form a one-two punch of political theater that has done more to damage the Democratic brand in the Midwest than any Republican attack ad ever could.

If there were a clown school for politicians who confuse viral moments with actual governance, Walz and Omar would be the valedictorians.

Tim Walz: The Accidental Running Mate

Let's start with Governor Walz. When Kamala Harris plucked him from relative obscurity to be her running mate in 2024, the Democratic establishment sold him as "Midwestern dad energy" — a folksy, flannel-wearing everyman who could win over working-class voters in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

It didn't work. Not even close.

Walz stumbled through the campaign with the energy of a substitute teacher who lost his lesson plan. His debate performance against JD Vance was widely panned as one of the most listless showings in modern vice presidential history. He fumbled basic questions, seemed caught off guard by predictable attacks, and projected all the commanding presence of a man trying to return a router at Best Buy.

The Harris-Walz ticket lost every swing state. Every. Single. One. And the states Walz was supposed to deliver — the blue-wall Rust Belt — flipped red. The great Midwestern ambassador turned out to be a liability, not a bridge.

Back in Minnesota, Walz has continued to govern like a man still auditioning for a national audience he will never have again. His administration has been plagued by policy drift, bureaucratic bloat, and a gift for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. He signed spending bills that emptied the state's historic surplus, pushed green energy mandates that raised utility costs for working families, and watched Minneapolis struggle while issuing statements that read like they were drafted by a focus group that had never left St. Paul.

Ilhan Omar: The Controversy Machine

If Walz is the bumbling substitute teacher, Omar is the student who keeps setting off the fire alarm — and then acts surprised when the principal calls.

Since her arrival in Congress in 2019, Omar has been a near-constant source of controversy for Democratic leadership. Her comments on Israel and Jewish Americans have repeatedly forced her own party to issue statements of clarification, distance, and — on at least one occasion — formal condemnation. House Democrats had to pass a resolution condemning hatred in 2019 because of remarks she made, a remarkable feat for a freshman representative.

But Omar doesn't just embarrass her party nationally. She has become a lightning rod in her own district. In 2022, she barely survived a primary challenge. In 2024, she faced another serious threat and had to fight harder than any incumbent in a safely blue seat should ever have to. Her approval among Minnesota Democrats has eroded, not because of Republican attacks, but because many of her own constituents have grown tired of the constant circus.

Omar's talent for self-inflicted wounds is remarkable. Every few months, a new statement, tweet, or remark surfaces that sends Democratic strategists into damage-control mode. The pattern is so predictable that party operatives have reportedly factored "Ilhan Omar said something again" into their weekly crisis planning.

The Clown School Curriculum

So what would clown school look like for Minnesota's favorite Democratic duo? Let's imagine the syllabus:

  • Class 101: Knowing When to Stop Talking. Both Walz and Omar share a remarkable inability to let a news cycle pass without adding to it. Sometimes the best political move is silence. Neither has mastered this.
  • Class 201: Reading the Room. Walz's vp debate prep and Omar's social media strategy both suggest a fundamental disconnect with how average Americans — and average Minnesotans — receive their messages.
  • Class 301: Governing vs. Performing. There is a difference between being a political personality and being a public servant. Walz and Omar have blurred that line so thoroughly that it's unclear whether they remember the distinction.
  • Class 401: Party Loyalty That Actually Helps the Party. The Democratic Party doesn't need members who are liabilities. It needs members who can win elections, pass legislation, and communicate effectively. On all three counts, Walz and Omar are failing.

Why Their Own Party Should Be Concerned

Here's the thing: this isn't just a conservative critique. Plenty of mainstream Democrats privately acknowledge that Walz and Omar are problems. Walz's national rollout was a disaster that cost the party the election. Omar's controversies force resources away from winnable races and into defending an incumbency that should be safe.

The Democratic Party has a real challenge in the Midwest. Working-class voters, once the backbone of the coalition, have drifted away. The party needs messengers who can speak to those voters with credibility and authenticity. Instead, it has a governor who couldn't close the deal on the national stage and a congresswoman who can't go a quarter without a scandal.

Minnesota deserves better. The Democratic Party deserves better. And the American political discourse deserves better than two figures who treat public service as a performance art piece with no intermission.

So yes — maybe clown school is the answer. At least there, the makeup is part of the job description, and everyone knows it's an act. For Walz and Omar, the tragedy is that they seem to think they're serious politicians. The rest of us — including many in their own party — know better.
