Key Takeaways

  • 1.DEI programs often result in discrimination in the name of anti-discrimination
  • 2.The Supreme Court struck down race-based admissions in SFFA v. Harvard (2023)
  • 3.Universities average 45 DEI staff per 100 faculty
  • 4.Florida, Texas, and Utah have banned DEI programs at public universities
  • 5.The conservative alternative is merit, equal opportunity, and colorblind policies

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs have spread through American universities, corporations, and government agencies over the past two decades. Conservatives argue that these programs — however well-intentioned — have become a vehicle for discrimination, ideological conformity, and the replacement of merit with identity politics.

What DEI Is

DEI refers to institutional policies and programs designed to increase the representation of certain racial, ethnic, and gender groups. The three terms are not interchangeable:

  • Diversity focuses on demographic representation
  • Equity (distinct from equality) focuses on equal outcomes, not equal opportunity
  • Inclusion focuses on making certain groups feel welcome, often through speech codes and training

The shift from "equality" to "equity" is significant. Equality means equal treatment under the law. Equity means equal results — which requires treating people differently to achieve a predetermined outcome.

The Problem with DEI

Discrimination in the Name of Anti-Discrimination

DEI programs often result in explicit discrimination. Hiring quotas, scholarship set-asides, and promotion criteria based on race or gender are the very discrimination civil rights laws were written to prohibit. The Supreme Court's 2023 ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard found that race-based admissions at Harvard and UNC violated the Equal Protection Clause.

Ideological Conformity

DEI training programs often require employees and students to affirm specific ideological claims — that America is systemically racist, that all white people benefit from privilege, that objective standards are tools of oppression. Dissent is not tolerated. Faculty and employees who question these premises face professional consequences.

Bureaucratic Bloat

DEI bureaucracies have grown enormously. A 2021 Heritage Foundation study found that the average university has 45.1 DEI personnel per 100 faculty. The University of Michigan alone has over 150 DEI staff members with a budget exceeding $30 million annually.

Key Statistics

  • The Supreme Court struck down race-based college admissions in 2023 (SFFA v. Harvard)
  • Universities average 45 DEI staff per 100 faculty (Heritage Foundation, 2021)
  • The University of Michigan spends over $30 million annually on DEI
  • A 2023 study found that 52% of large corporations require DEI training
  • Florida, Texas, and Utah have banned DEI programs at public universities

The Conservative Alternative

Conservatives advocate a return to merit, equal opportunity, and colorblind policies:

  • Merit: Hiring, admissions, and promotion should be based on qualifications and performance — not identity
  • Equal Opportunity: The law should treat every individual the same, regardless of race or gender
  • Colorblindness: As Martin Luther King Jr. said, people should be judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin

Several states have acted. Florida's Stop WOKE Act and similar legislation in Texas and Utah have eliminated DEI bureaucracies at public universities. The results have been positive — cost savings, reduced ideological pressure, and no decline in educational quality.

What's at Stake

The DEI debate is ultimately about whether America will be a nation where individuals are judged on merit and character — or a nation where people are sorted by race, gender, and ideology. The conservative position is clear: equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. Merit, not quotas. Character, not color.
