China Bought Your Farmland: The Silent Land Grab Threatening National Security

A National Security Threat Hiding in Plain Sight

While Americans have been distracted by domestic political battles, a silent invasion has been taking place across the American heartland. Chinese entities, many with direct ties to the Chinese Communist Party, have been purchasing American farmland at an alarming rate. According to Department of Agriculture data, foreign ownership of American agricultural land has reached over 40 million acres — an area larger than the state of Florida. Chinese ownership, while not the largest foreign holder, has been growing the fastest.

What makes this land grab particularly dangerous is not just the acreage — it is the location. Chinese purchases have included land near sensitive military installations, including Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Fort Campbell in Kentucky, and Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. The implications for espionage and national security are staggering.

The Chinese Communist Party does not distinguish between private enterprise and state enterprise. Every Chinese company, every Chinese investment, operates under the ultimate control of a regime that has declared the United States its primary strategic rival. When Chinese entities buy American farmland, they are not making a commercial investment — they are extending Chinese state power into American territory.

The Strategic Implications

The purchase of American farmland near military bases is not a coincidence. It is a calculated strategy. Land near military installations provides opportunities for surveillance — monitoring troop movements, testing new technologies, intercepting communications, and potentially disrupting military operations.

The Grand Forks case illustrates the threat. A Chinese company called Fufeng Group purchased 370 acres of land just 20 minutes from Grand Forks Air Force Base, which houses some of the most sensitive military drone technology in the American arsenal. The local community raised the alarm, but the federal government was slow to respond. It was only after intense public pressure that the project was ultimately blocked.

How many other purchases have gone unnoticed? How many are still pending? The truth is, we do not know. The federal government does not maintain a comprehensive, real-time database of foreign agricultural land purchases. The reporting requirements are weak, the enforcement is non-existent, and the penalties for non-compliance are minimal.

The Food Security Dimension

Beyond the national security implications, the Chinese land grab threatens American food security. Agriculture is a strategic industry. The ability to feed a nation is a fundamental requirement of sovereignty. When foreign adversaries own the land that produces American food, they have leverage over the American food supply.

China's interest in American farmland is not accidental. The Chinese government has made food security a national priority, and its strategy includes purchasing agricultural land and food production assets around the world. By controlling agricultural land in the United States, China gains influence over American food production, prices, and supply chains.

The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the vulnerability of global supply chains. The American people experienced shortages of basic goods for the first time in generations. Now imagine a scenario where a hostile foreign power controls a significant portion of American agricultural land and decides to weaponize that control. The consequences would be devastating.

The Failure of Federal Oversight

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) is the primary federal body responsible for reviewing foreign investments that may affect national security. But CFIUS has historically focused on technology, finance, and infrastructure — not agricultural land. Its review of agricultural land purchases has been inconsistent, reactive, and inadequate.

The Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act (AFIDA) requires foreign buyers to disclose agricultural land purchases to the USDA, but the law has significant gaps. There is no pre-purchase review process. There is no mechanism for blocking purchases on national security grounds. The penalties for failing to disclose are trivial — a maximum of 25% of the land's value, a cost of doing business for foreign entities with deep pockets.

The USDA's data on foreign land ownership is years out of date and riddled with inaccuracies. The federal government does not actually know how much American agricultural land is owned by foreign entities, let alone by entities connected to the Chinese Communist Party. This is an intelligence failure of the highest order.

What Must Be Done

The solution is straightforward. Congress must pass legislation that restricts foreign ownership of American agricultural land, particularly by entities connected to adversarial nations like China.

Ban purchases near military installations. No foreign entity — particularly from a nation designated as a strategic competitor — should be allowed to purchase land within a defined radius of any American military base, research facility, or critical infrastructure site. This should be non-negotiable.

Require pre-purchase review. All foreign agricultural land purchases should be subject to a mandatory pre-purchase national security review by CFIUS or a similar body. The burden should be on the buyer to prove the purchase does not threaten national security.

Establish a comprehensive tracking system. The federal government must maintain a real-time, comprehensive database of all foreign-owned agricultural land. This database should be publicly accessible, regularly updated, and subject to independent audit.

Penalize non-compliance. The penalties for failing to disclose foreign ownership, or for purchasing land in violation of restrictions, must be severe enough to serve as a genuine deterrent. Seizure of the land should be on the table.

Encourage American ownership. Tax incentives, low-interest loans, and other support should be provided to keep American farmland in American hands. The family farm is an American institution — it should be protected, not sold to the highest foreign bidder.

The Bigger Picture

The Chinese land grab is part of a larger pattern of Chinese influence operations in the United States. From Confucius Institutes on college campuses to corporate espionage in technology firms to the purchase of American media companies, the Chinese Communist Party is waging a comprehensive campaign to extend its influence into every corner of American life.

The purchase of American farmland is not just an economic transaction. It is a strategic maneuver by a hostile foreign power. Every acre of American soil that falls under Chinese control is an acre lost to American sovereignty. Every farm near a military base that falls into foreign hands is a potential intelligence disaster.

The American people deserve to know who is buying their land, how much they are buying, and why. The silence from Washington on this issue is deafening. It is time for that silence to end. The fight for American farmland is a fight for American sovereignty — and it is a fight worth winning.
